Home/Leather care guide

Well-made leather shoes can last for years but only if you look after them properly. With a simple care routine and the right products, you can keep your shoes looking polished, protected, and full of life.

Leather Care Guide

1. Clean Before You Care

Always start by removing dirt and dust. Use a soft brush or cloth to wipe down the surface. For a deeper clean, apply Dasco Leather Cleaner to lift dirt, old polish, and buildup without damaging the leather. Allow your shoes to dry naturally. Avoid direct heat, as it can dry and crack the leather.

2. Condition and Restore

Leather needs moisture to stay soft and prevent cracking. A quality cream polish both nourishes and restores colour.

Important: Leather creams should only be used on smooth leather. Do not use them on suede, nubuck or patent leathers as they can damage the texture and finish.

Choose a shade that matches your shoes:

  • Black shoes: black leather cream
  • Brown tones: dark brown or camel leather cream
  • Unique colours: blue, red, wine, mustard, petrol, or diesel leather cream
  • When in doubt: neutral cream works across all shades without altering colour

3. Buff to a Shine

Once the cream has absorbed (after a few minutes), buff the shoes with a clean cloth or brush. This enhances the finish and brings out a natural shine while evenly distributing the product.

4. Protect Against the Elements

To guard against rain, stains, and everyday wear, finish with Leather Protector. This creates an invisible barrier that helps repel water and dirt without affecting the look or feel of the leather.

How often to apply:
For best protection, spray your shoes with leather protector every 2–3 weeks with regular wear, or after every deep clean or polish. If you wear your shoes daily or in poor weather conditions, you may want to apply it more frequently (about once a week). Always reapply after heavy rain or cleaning.

6. Patent leather guide

Patent leather has a sealed, glossy plastic-like coating, which means it does not absorb creams, polishes and sprays the way smooth leather does. Leather creams and standard leather protection sprays (like water and stain repellents) are designed to soak into natural leather fibres. On patent leather they can sit on the surface and potentially cause:

  • Streaking or cloudiness
  • Dulling of the high-gloss finish
  • Uneven patches or residue build-up.
  • Sit on the surface and attract dirt

How to care for patent leather instead

Patent leather only needs light, surface-level care:

  • Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dirt
  • Use a dedicated patent leather cleaner or gentle soap solution if needed
  • Finish by buffing with a dry microfibre cloth to restore shine

What to avoid

  • Leather creams and wax polishes
  • Abrasive brushes or rough cloths
  • Excess moisture or harsh solvents

6. Maintain Regularly

Consistency is key to keeping leather shoes in top condition:

  • Frequent wear: clean and condition weekly
  • Occasional wear: every 2–3 weeks
  • Before storage: clean, condition, and protect

Extra Care Tips

  • Use shoe trees to maintain shape and reduce creasing
  • Rotate your shoes to allow them to breathe
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight
  • Always test products on a small, hidden area first

Keep Your Shoes Looking Their Best

With the right products and a simple routine, leather shoes will age beautifully rather than wear out. Regular care not only preserves their appearance but also extends their lifespan—so every step looks as good as the first.
